Mom’s Out For Summer

I’ve officially called it quits. Or let’s just say, I’ve taken a long hiatus. My synapses aren’t firing as quickly, my reflexes are numb, and the thought of cutting the crusts off another turkey sandwich might possibly send me over ‘The Edge’. We’re down to the count now. I can see the finish line. Eight more days. Eight more days until school’s out and summer officially begins. I keep reminding myself that it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and after having a strong start last August, I’m lucky to be limping along at this point. All I want to do is look for the shortcut, take my medal and head to the closest beach/wave pool/mini-bar. It doesn’t help that my Facebook feed is littered with smiling faces of family and friends sitting in the sunshine with an ice cold beverage in hand, soaking up the sunscreen in their swimsuits, or just simply hanging out and re-lax-ing.

I can’t feign interest in anything remotely school-related anymore. I’m ready for Summer. I’m ready to be schedule-free, to eat breakfast for dinner and ice cream for lunch. To practice ‘cannonballs’ in the pool, start our scientific tally on which Frozen Yogurt flavors are the best (and worst), and freshen up on our Friday Night Dance moves. I know a few weeks from now, when the school uniforms have been put away for good, the backpacks have been pushed to the back of the closet, and my boys’ complaining and whining will have hit one too many of my nerves, I will stop, sigh, briefly look at the calendar and count the number of days until school starts up again. But then I’m going to gently remind myself that summer is short enough, and my boys’ childhood is even shorter, closing in with each passing year, and although it can be hard to do, sometimes painfully hard to do with the daily grind, I’m going to try, really try to just sit back, let go, enjoy the moments and soak up the Summer…because before I know it, I’ll be cutting the crusts off the bread again.

Cheers to Summer! xx

  1. We have been out for a couple of weeks now. With me though I am so ready for them to get out, but with two boys at home with me all day during the summer I quickly am ready for school to start again 🙂 Plus my son says that I am mean since I make him do work book everyday during the summer!
