Snow came today and it was so pretty…and so cold. From now until about March, I freeze and no amount of blankets or hot tea or wearing my boys’ slippers is enough to keep me warm. I even wear my winter coat in the house sometimes (please tell me I’m not the only one?!) To stave off the chills, and as a nice alternative when I simply can’t drink another Earl Grey, I make this delicious recipe for Golden Milk. It’s a great bedtime nightcap, and with a healthy dose of turmeric, it offers immune-boosting benefits, and makes me sleepy too – perfect on a cold winter’s night.
Do you have a drink that keeps you warm?
Turmeric Golden Milk Recipe:
8 oz. milk of choice (dairy, almond, soy, coconut or my preference Unsweetened Ripple).
1 tsp. ground Turmeric*
Pinch of Black Pepper (to help absorb the turmeric)
1 tsp. Honey or Maple Syrup to taste
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon (optional)
1/2 tsp. Coconut Oil (optional)
Heat milk in a pan until warm (or zap in microwave if you’re too tired and cold and just want to get in bed). Add turmeric, black pepper, honey, cinnamon and coconut oil to pan and whisk well, as turmeric will sink to bottom. Pour in your favorite mug. Sip and enjoy.
* Turmeric is an acquired taste, with a slightly peppery, bitter taste, so if you’re not used to it, you may want to use a smaller amount initially, say 1/2 tsp., and adjust according to taste. Also, it can stain…countertops, coffee cups, teeth, etc. so clean up any little spills.
