Fashion! Fantasy! Fun!

We don’t watch a lot of TV in our house, for the simple reason that, honestly, who has the time? I remember when I was pregnant with my first son, a family friend had explained parenting this way: “You can watch the beginning of Law & Order when the crime happens, or you can watch the end when the criminal is caught, but you cannot watch both.” Any parent knows how true this statement is! There are just too many other things to do, plus, let’s face it, watching another reality show? No thanks.

However, I do make one exception. Awards season. I love watching the Golden Globes and the Oscars. I think it takes me out of my ‘Which pair of yoga pants should I wear today?’ mentality for a moment. The hair, the makeup, the toned arms and bad spray-tans, the pageantry of it all, and of course, the dresses! I play a game of What Would I Wear? Which celebrity’s dress would I choose? Depending on my mood, of course, perhaps a simple and sexy, high-slit black dress, or maybe a flashy, sparkles and sequins number with a ruffled, tulle skirt? What hairstyle would I choose? A classic chignon? Messy beach waves? Straight and sleek? Hmmmm…and let’s not forget the essential accessories! Diamonds, colored jewels, maybe just a simple 24-kt gold arm bangle to show off my toned elbow? Oh, the choices, the decisions, oh my! It’s just too much damn fun to watch the fabulous fashion Do’s, and the WTF Were They Thinking? Don’ts. And, so, for a brief, 2-hour period (mind you, still interrupted by needy little people), I get to play Cinderella in my head, without the sore feet, borrowed jewels or bad hangover the next day. It’s a win-win.

Here are a few of my favorite looks from last nights’ Golden Globes.

Jessica Alba in a peach-colored Oscar de la Renta gown with ruffled train. A perfect example of how the right lipstick color can play up a look.

I love Jennifer Garner's couture Vivienne Westwood gown. The rich red/burgundy color is beautiful and her messy up-do makes for an effortless look.

Zosia Mamet (who? HBO's Girls fame) leather-trimmed, rocker-chic inspired Tony Ward gown. I love it.

If you've got it, flaunt it. Katherine McPhee in a black Theyskens' Theory gown with a plunging neckline. Is a 'neckline' even called a neckline when it hits your belly button?

Kate Hudson makes a statement with a black Alexander McQueen keyhole dress with gold embroidery.
Kate Hudson’s black Alexander McQueen keyhole dress with long sleeves and gold embroidery shows you don’t need to show a whole lot of flesh to make a statement.

  1. I adore Jessica’s dress! That’s what a movie star should look like! Although I like Kate’s look, it sure does make her look like her Momma. 🙂 Found you through Bloggy Moms.
